A Walk Through The Pet Cemetery: Joey Ramone’s Road to Fame

Jeffery Ross Hyman was known as one of the legendary originators of the punk scene. But most knew him by his stage name, Joey Ramone.

Joey was one of the three founders of the often idolized Queens New York punk band, The Ramones. After their 1974 appearance into existence, The Ramones took their leap to fame once Joey became the lead singer. Since then they have done over 2,250 shows and have inspired other infamous punk band such as The Sex Pistols and The Clash. Due to his big influence to the music world; Joey Ramone is idolized by most vintage, modern, and post modern grunge.

Joey Ramone’s individualistic vocals and writing style greatly impacted The Ramones. According to 365 Punk by Arnold Mathers “When the Ramone’s first got their start in 1974, Joey was originally the drummer for the band. Until their manager Thomas Erderlyi switched his post to lead vocals because the original lead singer’s (Dee Dee Ramone) often kept cracking during some of the band’s earlier recordings.” That was the first step taken by the band the led them on to their path to eternal eminence. Ever since Joey took his post as the lead singer for The Ramones, they have put their home town of Forrest Hills, New York on the map. According to a documentary on The Ramones “…After realizing the he’s the lead singer, Joey took most of the responsibility of becoming the band’s chief song writer.” A lot of the songs that he wrote were about his memories of his dysfunctional family life during his childhood. Another muse that he used for his music was the many oddities that revolved around his life. A perfect example song would be “The KKK Took my Baby Away”
